Happy Last Week of School!!!
It is hard to believe the year has flown by! We have learned so much together and created some great memories along the way. It was my pleasure to teach all of you this year :) I hope you all have a well deserved summer break. I can't wait to see you all in the fall!! :)

It`s hard to believe there is only a few weeks left of school. The students have been working on finishing up many things and putting some great effort into their work. This week I will be sending home their most recent writing piece. I am very impressed with their hard work!! This week we will also be wrapping up our social studies unit. This week we will be exploring artifacts from the past and comparing them to objects that we have today.

Grade 4- Finir les parties du château fort
The students did a great job presenting their projects to their peers. I am very impressed with how they turned out. They really enjoyed this project! I will be sending home feedback soon. The grade 3`shave been sharing what they already know about pioneers and early settlers in Canada. We have been reading, acting and exploring how the pioneers arrived and their influence on our lives today. Please feel free to share what you know with your child. Please have your child finish l`arrivée des pionniers (read and draw to show their understanding).
The grade 4s have been learning and sharing their knowledge about everyday life during the medieval times. They have been discussing how peoples lives were strongly influences based on where they were in the hierarchy. We have also been investigating the different roles in society, clothing, homes, food, education, recreation etc. This week students will be comparing life during the medieval times to life today. They will also be researching different aspects of everyday life.

Most students wrote and finished their quizzes last week! I will be sending them home later this week. The students are working on their maquettes to share their learning about an aboriginal village. This week they will be recording important information into a graphic organizer. They must include all parts in their dioramas and will be expected to share them using their knowledge and new vocabulary. This will be added into their yellow duotangs. Our goal is to have our dioramas finished by Friday this week so we can share them next week during education week.

This week students will be completing their mini inquiry projects. We are putting all of our information together creating a collaborative inquiry to learn more about past communities. This week we will be focusing on comparing aboriginal communities and understanding how they have influenced life today! I have pushed back their quiz to next week. I will post a review this Thursday to help them prepare. They can review the reading les premiers habitants and the map found in their yellow duotangs.
I am pleased to see the student bringing in their items for their dioramas (les maquettes). We are hoping to start creating our maquettes within the next week. Many students have begun bringing in their items:) Please remind your child to collect items they may need: A box - Sticks, toothpicks, bark, stones, animals, clay, play-doh, cotton, pipe cleaners...
Their maquette will represents an Aboriginal community in Canada. They will then share their dioramas with the class using their current knowledge and thematic vocabulary (location, how homes were built, food, tools and objects, transportation, clothing, jobs...). The students are very excited for this upcoming project :) I look forward to seeing them share their learning.

We will also be starting a group research project this week to learn more about aboriginal societies. We are working on developing questions and using a variety of resources to find and share important information. Here is an overview of what the students will be working on:
Group research project: Les Autochtones
First, the students will have the chance to choose the topic they will be learning about with their group.
Next, they will have time to reflect on what we have learned and develop questions as a group to start their inquiry.
After, they will use the success criteria and classroom resources to find important information. (web sites, duotangs, textbooks, library books etc)
Finally, they will organize their information, compare the past to the present and share their learning using one of the following tools: Google docs, Google Slides, PicCollage, Informative Poster.

This week we will also be beginning our second unit in Social studies. Please have your child explore the websites found under the resources section- the websites are English and French! We will be learning about :

The big ideas
Grade 3
1)The different communities in early-nineteenth century Canada influence the way we live today.
2)Social and environmental challenges were a major part of life in all communities in early-nineteenthcentury Canada.
3) Canada was already a multicultural society in 1800.
Grade 4
1) By studying the past, we can better understand the present.
2) The environment had a major impact on daily life in early societies.
3) Not all early societies were the same.
For the beginning of the unit, we will be learning more about indigineous communities in Canada. The students will work together to think of questions they have and would like to learn more about. They will be brainstorming questions in small groups thinking about: food, transportation, housing, clothing, employment etc.

They have had so much fun learning and researching about the Olympics. We have been listening to songs and playing games to review our numbers from 30-100 in class. We have also been working on the verbs être et avoir. Please have your child read Phi Phi. Homework this week is for them to circle the verbs (être et avoir) throughout the story. We will complete the rest of the page in class.
This week we are continuing to work on answering questions sharing our opinions. Keep encouraging your child to practise this at home too!

The student are having so much fun learning about the different sports, countries and athletes in the olympics. They used the chromebooks and researched some information about an athlete they wanted to know more about. They are working on wroting a short paragraph and sharing their information using flipgrid. They will get the chance to see and hear themselves speak french!
This week we will also be focusing on sharing our opinions using persuasive vocabulary and transition words. They are learning how to give their opinion and develop a reason to support it. For extra practise at home ask them simple questions and have them practise answering them using full sentences.
This week have your child practise answering questions orally using persuasive vocabulary. They can also read les jeux olympiques again!

Last week I sent home `les vacances d`hiver` rubrics. The students writing is on the wall for other to see and will be sent home next week for you to see :)
Hope you all had a wonderful long weekend with your families!! Last week we had so much fun with all the winter activities. This week we will be continuing to learn about the olympics. The students will be continuing to research an olympian and write a short paragraph about them. They will then be using flipgridd (videos) to talk about their olympian orally. I thought it would be fun to have them learn even more at home by watching the olympics en français. This will help them build their French vocabulary in a fun way! Please have your child read les jeux olympiques this week. We will be working on filling in the blanks in class today! Reminder: When reading have them work on their reading strategies (sound out words, make sense of unknown words, mots amis, mots familiers).

Last week we had so much fun beginning to learn and talk about the winter olympics (les olympiques d'hiver). The students showed their creativity as they created their own unique mascot using canadien symbols. We have also been playing some games and listening to different videos to learn about all of the different winter sports. The students have chosen an athlete to learn more about. They are using the chromebooks to find information and are beginning to write a short paragraph on their athlete of choice (olympien/olympienne). There are so many great websites and videos on youtube in both English and French. This week we will be working a little more on this, although we have a busy week ahead. Winter Carnival Week is here!! Please make sure your child is dressed well for our winter activities :) Have a great week! Joyeuse Saint-Valentin!
